Mazingira Monday: Road to Addis Ababa, #AfricaClimateSummit2
I’m glad to share that my latest article is now live on Citizen Digital, where I reflect on Africa’s climate journey from the 2023 Nairobi Summit to the upcoming #ACS2 in Addis Ababa this September.
Last year, Nairobi was framed as Africa’s moment to lead global climate action. The Nairobi Declaration set bold goals, from climate finance and green energy to a unified continental voice. But challenges remained:
⚠️ Pledges fell short of Africa’s real climate finance needs
⚠️ Divisions persisted on fossil fuels vs. clean energy acceleration
⚠️ Civil society and frontline voices were often left out
Since then, we’ve seen momentum: the Loss & Damage Fund at COP28, Mission 300 for universal energy access, and growing efforts in carbon markets and green hydrogen.
As we head to Addis for Africa Climate Summit 2 the stakes are even higher.
Africa must move from promises to delivery, financing mini-grids, scaling clean cooking solutions, and ensuring communities are not just included, but empowered.
Nairobi promised. Addis must deliver. Office of Kenya’s Special Envoy for Climate Change
